Prices at the pump
Held up
Diesel is at records in October 2026. A claimed energy ceasefire did not hold.

End the price spike. Produce more American energy. Do not start new wars that feed the oil market.
What happened
- Energy-permitting orders are in effect. See the energy entry.
- A limited Russian diesel purchase was announced. Analysts told CNBC the volume is small.
Domestic drilling policy did change. That is a separate entry. It has not made diesel cheap.
NBC, citing AAA, put the national diesel average at about $6.26 a gallon on October 12, 2026, nearly 80 percent higher than at the start of the year. Reuters the same week described fresh U.S. diesel records around $6.50 and Brent crude near $107.
Reuters dates the Iran war to late February 2026 and says it is still going. Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries and Russia’s strikes on Ukrainian energy are the other squeeze on diesel.
Over the October 11–12 weekend the president announced an “energy ceasefire” and defended a limited purchase of Russian diesel. Reuters reported that President Zelensky said Russia hit at least six energy targets anyway. CNBC reported Brent settled at $106.65 on October 12. The market did not treat the announcement as peace.
What is holding it up
This one is not stuck in a Senate filibuster. Diesel is priced on a world market in the middle of two wars. An executive order cannot set that price. The administration’s own moves this week — a claimed ceasefire, and a small Russian diesel purchase — are an attempt to pull it down. As of October 13 they had not.
Still ahead
- No ceasefire both sides are honoring.
- Pump prices are up, not down, versus the start of 2026.

Announced energy ceasefire does not hold
The president said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop hitting energy sites. Ukraine reported new strikes. Russia said talks were continuing.
If you haul freight, run equipment, or buy food that moves by truck, this promise is not in the price. Gasoline is described as elevated. Diesel is the acute problem.
